JSON Formatter & Validator
Format, minify, and validate your JSON data locally in your browser. All processing happens on your device, ensuring your sensitive data never leaves your computer.
Why format JSON?
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the standard format for data exchange on the web. However, raw JSON is often minified (compressed into a single line) to save bandwidth, making it impossible for humans to read. Formatting (or "pretty-printing") adds indentation and line breaks so developers can easily debug the structure.
How does the JSON Validator work?
Our tool attempts to parse your input using native browser APIs. If your JSON has trailing commas, missing quotes, or syntax errors, the parser catches it instantly and highlights the exact error preventing validation.
Understanding JSON Validation
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the standard data interchange format for modern web APIs. However, it is notoriously strict. Unlike HTML, which browsers try to parse even if malformed, a single misplaced comma or unquoted string will cause a JSON parser to throw an error and halt execution.
Our validator doesn't just check for valid syntax; it highlights exactly where the parsing failed. If you paste an API response that was truncated or improperly escaped, the formatter will catch the SyntaxError and prevent it from breaking your application downstream.
Formatting vs. Minification
Formatting (Prettifying): Raw API responses are often served as a single, continuous string of text. This is efficient for machines but unreadable for developers. The formatter parses the raw string and reconstructs it with proper indentation, line breaks, and spacing, allowing you to visually inspect the data hierarchy.
Minification: When you are ready to deploy your application or send a payload, every byte counts. Minification does the reverse of formatting—it strips out all unnecessary whitespace, line breaks, and indentation. This reduces the payload size without altering the data's structure or meaning, which is critical for optimizing network performance on mobile devices.
Privacy and Client-Side Execution
Many online JSON formatters send your data to a remote server for processing. If you are formatting proprietary API payloads, customer data, or configuration files containing secrets, sending this data over the internet is a severe security risk.
This tool is built entirely with client-side JavaScript. When you paste your JSON, the parsing and formatting are executed by your browser's native JSON.parse() and JSON.stringify() methods. Your data never leaves your device and is never logged or stored.
